Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens is an American singer and rapper better than her stage name Queen Latifah. Queen Latifah's work in television and music has been recognized with a Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award and six more Grammy nominations and an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah was born in and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita an educator who worked in Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Sr. as a police officer. Her father and mother divorced when Latifah turned ten. Latifah was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. At the age of 8 when her mother gave Latifah the name of a stage Latifah, which means delicate and kind in Arabic. Latifah's height of 5'10" was enough to make her a formidable forward in high school. She performed the number home from the musical The Wiz in a high school play. Latifah began her career as a beatboxer with The Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah was a part of in the Flavor Unit in its original model, consisting of a group of MCs led by producer DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a demo of Queen Latifah her rap Princess of the Posse. The recording was handed over to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music signed Latifah upon hearing the track. She released her first single Wrath of My Madness, in the year 1988.
